Gippsland Lakes Complete Health Children’s Centre delivered a fun packed Vacation Care program for Lakes Entrance children last month, which included a range of educational excursions exploring the local environment.

“Our Vacation Care program provides children with safe, stimulating and creative activities during school holidays”, said Children’s Centre coordinator Jodie Jarvis.

Daily excursions included an ‘exploration’ at Raymond Island, where the children enjoyed Koala spotting, and a paddle in the lake after lunch. They also explored the beach for items of interest to investigate on returning to the centre.

Other activities included a tour of the Lakes Entrance Fisherman’s Co-op where the children watched the fishing boats unload their catch; a recreational fishing demonstration including information about catch length and limits; and a visit to Krowathinkalunkalong (The Keeping Place in Bairnsdale) where they impressed staff with their knowledge of the local indigenous culture.

“Our aim was to engage the children with a variety of fun and exciting local experiences,” explained Ms Jarvis. “We’re confident we achieved this by the reaction from children – some who wished they could attend every day; and the feedback from parents – who are delighted for their children to attend Vacation Care in the next round of school holidays.”

A particular highlight for the children was a trip to the Buchan Caves, where they got to investigate, explore and learn all about the caves history. The children also learnt about the sustainability of the land and animals that live there.  Due to its success, the early childhood educators at the children’s centre decided to include it in their Pre-Primary Program – a program designed to introduce young children to a school-like environment.
