While many people will have heard of the ‘Meals on Wheels’ service delivering meals to people in their homes, fewer may have heard of ‘Wheels to Meals’.

“Wheels to Meals gives clients a chance to get out of the house and enjoy regular social outings. They get to have a meal, catch up with old friends and make new ones,” said Janet Taylor, Volunteer Coordinator at Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH), Bairnsdale. “Everybody has a great time, and they are looking after their health too.”

Wheels to Meals is aimed at members of the public who are socially isolated and may be nutritionally at risk. The program promotes social interaction and inclusion while eating a healthy meal. Many long term friendships have evolved from the regular meetings.

Bairnsdale RSL are great supporters of the program, partnering with GLCH to host the weekly outings, prepare delicious meals and lend their bus to collect and drop off participants. Trained staff and volunteers from GLCH collect the clients from their homes and transport them to the lunch venue. The bus currently travels as far afield as Clifton Creek and is quite a social event in itself.

New clients and volunteers are always welcome to join the group and will be made very welcome. Contact GLCH directly on 5155 8300 to become involved.
