Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH) is excited to welcome Thomas Conway to the large multi disciplinary Allied Health Team. Thomas is an Occupational Therapist, and joins Ainsleigh Whelan and Danielle Thomson in delivering a comprehensive Occupational Therapy service.

The primary goal of Occupational Therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life, for which their capacity may have been affected due to illness, disability or injury. The team at GLCH achieves this by working with people of all ages and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations that they want, need, or are expected to do, or modify the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement as required.

GLCH has recently trained five allied health professionals to become registered to provide Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) HomeFront assessments to DVA Gold and White card holders. HomeFront is a Falls Prevention program funded by the DVA to provide home assessments and make recommendations to the veteran regarding environmental strategies to reduce the risk of falls in/around the home.

GLCH has a large, skilled paediatric allied health service including physiotherapy, podiatry, occupational therapy and speech pathology. The team work with children providing assessment and treatment of developmental conditions, fine motor, gross motor, visual motor, and sensory motor difficulties.

Thomas joins the Occupational Therapy team working with children and families who may have difficulties with meeting their developmental milestones, or who have a diagnosed condition or injury. GLCH is accredited to provide services under the Helping Children with Autism, Medicare and Better Start initiatives. Services are delivered in a 1:1 capacity or in a group setting in programs such as the Active Lorikeets, Physically Active Kids or Moving Meerkats.

GLCH has a well equipped hand therapy department, offering assessment and treatment of common hand injuries such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, rehabilitation post surgery and/or injury.  The addition of Tom to this team brings along a wealth of knowledge and interest within the area of hand therapy.

The Allied Health professionals have recently completed a series of workshops delivered by Professor Robert Iansek and the team of practitioners from Southern Health. The workshops focused on continuity of care for clients with Parkinson’s, enhancing the skills required when working with this group of clients. The series of workshops has increased the knowledge of the team and has assisted with developing GLCH’s model of service delivered to Parkinson’s clients and their families. GLCH is currently contracted to complete assessments for the current National Parkinson’s Foundation Research project.

In joining the Occupational Therapy team at GLCH, Thomas brings new skills and experience to the allied health service.
