Lorna Knowles, a wonderfully dedicated volunteer with Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH) for over 20 years, has recently retired from her position. Over the course of her commitment to our organisation, Lorna had been continually involved in the Planned Activity Group (PAG), previously known as Day Centre.

Lorna volunteered every Monday up until 12 months ago when she changed from volunteering weekly to fortnightly. She was also always prepared and willing to do emergency fill in for other PAG days. Lorna participated in many workshops and training sessions to ensure that all PAG participants received the quality care and support that they require.

When Lorna first commenced volunteering in Day Centre, meals were provided by Meals On Wheels. However, changes to the Day Centre activities saw the introduction of all meals being cooked on site. Lorna happily adapted to this change and, with support of her fellow volunteers, produced many appetising and inspiring meals.

PAG Staff, participants and fellow volunteers came together over a shared lunch to farewell Lorna with much laughter, reminiscence and a poem written by a client. Lorna was presented with a framed appreciation certificate and a small gift.

GLCH is now in the process of recruiting more dedicated volunteers. By becoming a volunteer with GLCH, people of all walks of life have the chance to help us deliver a range of services to the community. Volunteers will receive basic training in organisational requirements and each service will provide any additional training required for their discipline.

PAG provides social support in a relaxed environment where people can enjoy the company of others, share experiences, and share meals. Planned activities can include guest speakers, music, quizzes, card games, craft, outings, and gentle or chair based exercise sessions. These activities ensure that the individual’s independence within the community is maintained.

There are many ways to be involved, as an individual or as an organisation. If you are interested in becoming involved through volunteering, contact Gippsland Lakes Complete Health at any of our locations in Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Bruthen, Metung or Nowa Nowa
