We recently brought together a fantastic group of principals, school nurses and teachers for our first-ever East Gippsland Schools Networking Breakfast — and the energy in the room was nothing short of inspiring.

Held at The Brew Crew Café in Bairnsdale (a brilliant local social enterprise), the event was all about exploring new, practical ways to help students eat well, move more, and thrive at school.

Guest speaker Bernie Walsh from the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) shared some incredibly creative ideas to embed movement into everyday school life — from line markings on the asphalt to walking clubs and making sports gear more accessible.

“Students spend half their awake hours at school, and up to 80% of that time can be spent sitting down,” Bernie told us.

“We don’t always have to be sitting down to learn.”

We loved hearing from Libby Tuckett, school nurse at Nagle College, who left the breakfast brimming with practical ideas.

“The information was mind-blowing. I want to go out to students at recess and lunch with a platter of fruit and veg and just offer it. So many students don’t eat breakfast or lunch — they just slump.”

Our own Health Promotion team leader Jaquie Nethercote said the event was designed to spark connection and collaboration between schools.

“By sharing what’s working and what’s possible, we can create momentum and support each other to make meaningful, healthy changes for our students.”

At GLCH, we’re proud to deliver a suite of school-based health promotion programs including:

  • – Get Your Game On Outside
  • – Vic Kids Eat Well
  • – Vaping Prevention
  • – The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.

All of our programs are designed to meet local needs and help our community stay connected, healthy and well.

We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us for the breakfast — and we’re excited to keep the conversations going. If you’re part of a local school and want to connect or find out more about our programs, please call our Health Promotion team on 5155 8300.

Let’s keep working together to help East Gippsland kids eat well, move more, and learn better.
